Is Non-Infill Turf Hotter Than Rubber-Filled Turf?

Surprisingly, no—not in many cases.

Traditional artificial turf relies on black SBR rubber granules that absorb and retain large amounts of solar energy.

Numerous field measurements have shown:

  • Natural grass remains the coolest surface.
  • Premium cooling non-infill turf generally performs better than traditional rubber-filled systems.
  • Rubber-filled systems often record the highest surface temperatures.

This is one of the reasons many municipalities, schools, universities, and professional sports facilities are transitioning toward modern non-infill technologies.

How to Reduce Surface Temperature

Choosing the right product is only one part of the solution.

Several practical strategies can significantly improve thermal comfort.

1. Select Cooling-Optimized Fibers

Look for products incorporating:

  • Reflective mineral pigments
  • Titanium dioxide (TiO₂)
  • Ceramic cooling additives
  • UV-resistant PE polymers
  • Hollow or structured fiber profiles

These technologies help reduce solar heat absorption while improving long-term weather resistance.

2. Install a Permeable Base System

A professionally designed permeable foundation helps dissipate heat and improves cooling after rainfall or irrigation.

Typical construction includes:

  • Crushed stone sub-base
  • Geotextile separator
  • Permeable asphalt or concrete
  • Permeable shock pad (optional)

3. Improve Airflow

Trees, shade sails, pergolas, or open-site planning can significantly reduce direct solar exposure while improving ventilation.

4. Light Watering Before Use

Light irrigation before sports activities can temporarily reduce surface temperatures by approximately 8–12°C (14–22°F), depending on weather conditions.

Although temporary, this method is widely used for tournaments held during hot weather.

5. Schedule Activities During Cooler Hours

Morning and evening activities generally provide the most comfortable playing conditions during summer.

Avoiding peak afternoon sunlight can substantially improve user comfort.
