Prepare and Compact the Subgrade

The first layer is the natural soil or engineered fill.

Before installing the aggregate layer, contractors should address:

  • Unsuitable soil
  • Organic material
  • Soft spots
  • Excessive moisture
  • Poor drainage
  • Differential settlement risks

The subgrade is then compacted using appropriate equipment.

A commonly encountered project specification may require a compaction level around 93% or higher, but this should not be treated as a universal requirement. The appropriate target depends on the soil classification, project design, applicable geotechnical specification, and compaction test method.

For professional sports facilities, a geotechnical assessment is preferable to relying on a generic percentage.
