Instead of asking a supplier:
“How many millimeters is your artificial grass?”
A better procurement specification is:
Application → pile height → tuft density → yarn Dtex/profile → backing → drainage → cushion → base → testing
For example, a residential project could request:
30 mm non-infill landscape turf + specified tuft density + specified yarn Dtex + stable backing + documented drainage performance + UV/weathering test data.
For a sports project, the specification should go further and include the required playing-surface performance and applicable certification/testing requirements.
Domestic Standards: How Should They Be Applied?
For projects in China, standards such as GB/T 20394 and GB 36246 may be relevant depending on the application. However, they should not be treated as interchangeable.
For example:
- Sports artificial turf: product specifications and sports-surface requirements should be checked against the applicable edition of GB/T 20394 and project specifications.
- School sports facilities: applicable mandatory requirements under GB 36246 should be verified.
- Playground applications: relevant playground-surface requirements should also be considered.
- Landscape applications: product selection should focus on the manufacturer’s technical specification, applicable material/environmental requirements and third-party test documentation.
For international projects, relevant EN, DIN, ASTM, FIFA or other project-specific requirements may apply. The exact standard should always be matched to the application and destination market.
