Sports turf is where the idea of a universal “ideal grass height” becomes particularly misleading.
For football and other sports, the specification should be based on the complete sports-surface system, not simply the pile height.
For example:
Turf → shock pad → base → drainage → installation
all influence the final playing characteristics.
For certified football turf, FIFA’s current Quality Programme evaluates multiple characteristics, including player-surface interaction, ball-surface interaction, durability, weather resistance and other performance requirements. Non-filled systems are also part of the current FIFA testing landscape.
Therefore, a manufacturer should provide a complete system specification and test documentation rather than simply saying that a certain pile height is “professional.”
Key Technical Parameters to Compare
| Parameter | What It Tells You | Why It Matters for Non-Infill Turf |
|---|---|---|
| Pile height | Fiber length above the backing | Affects appearance, feel and material consumption |
| Tuft density | Number of tufts per unit area | Important for fiber support and surface stability |
| Yarn Dtex | Linear density of the yarn | Helps indicate yarn mass and construction |
| Yarn profile | Shape and geometry of the fiber | Influences resilience and appearance |
| Backing | Structural support for the turf | Affects dimensional stability and durability |
| Drainage | Water evacuation capacity | Critical for outdoor installations |
| Shock pad | Impact attenuation and deformation | Particularly important for sports and children’s areas |
| UV/weathering performance | Resistance to outdoor aging | Relevant to long-term outdoor use |
This is why comparing two products simply by saying “both are 30 mm” can be misleading.
A 30 mm / high-density system and a 30 mm / low-density system may have substantially different performance.
