1. Pile Height and Tuft Density Work Together
In traditional infill artificial turf, sand and rubber or other infill materials help support the synthetic fibers. A non-infill system does not have this loose support layer.
Instead, the upright performance of the turf depends more heavily on:
- Tuft density
- Yarn Dtex and yarn geometry
- Fiber stiffness and resilience
- Primary and secondary backing stability
- Cushioning system
- Installation quality
This creates an important relationship:
The taller the pile, the more important the overall structural design becomes.
A tall pile with insufficient density may be more susceptible to flattening and can feel less stable under repeated traffic. Increasing pile height alone therefore does not necessarily improve performance.
For non-infill turf, a moderate pile height combined with appropriate density and yarn construction can often provide a more balanced solution.
